Karl Ory has been active in the Chico community and Chico politics for over 40 years, serving as a Chico City Councilmember (6yrs) as well as Mayor of Chico (2yrs). View Karl’s career highlights below:

  • Director of CAVE in the 1970s (big shout out to CAVE 50th anniversary this year!).
  • Director Butte County American Red Cross (2 yrs).
  • First Self-Help Housing Manager CHIP. Brought millions of dollars into Gridley, Hamilton City and Orland and helped 200 families become owner/builders. (6yrs).
  • Senior Housing Specialist at Rural Community Assistance Corp, helping communities in 11-state region with development and housing. (6yrs).
  • First Self-Help Housing Manager at SHHIP, and helped 100 families become self-help homebuilders in four subdivisions and infill lots in Corning.(6yrs).
  • Western Regional Director for the national Housing Assistance Council, providing training and technical assistance to dozens of rural communities nationwide. Expert in several federal housing programs. (9yrs).
  • Led Campaign California, a statewide political advocacy organization, as Sacramento regional director, then as Executive Director. Closed Rancho Seco, passed tobacco tax. (5yrs).
  • Taught Political Science parttime at Shasta College (2yrs)
  • Analyst at Kennedy Jenks Engineering in Chico, parttime, helped with funding for sewer plants in Willows and Yuba area (3yrs).
  • Community Work
  • Saturday Downtown Chico Farmers Market, founded and co-led Friends of the Farmers Market. Stopped the eviction, wrote new agreement to give market stability, collected 9200 signatures to make it law.
  • Airport Commissioner for City of Chico (2yr). Leading effort to return air service to Chico.
  • 20th St. Junkyard. Leading effort to uphold the 15-yr old promise to Chapman Community to Move the Junkyard.
  • Silver Dollar Fair boardmember, appointed by Governor. (2yrs)
  • Chico Creek Nature Center boardmember. Help get new nature center built.(3yrs)
  • Sacramento Unified School District, co- chair of Master School Facility Plan committee
    Led to bond measure to fix up schools citywide.(1yr)
  • Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from CSU Chico. Housing Development Finance certification from National Development Council.
  • Graduated from St. Bernard High School in Los Angeles, El Camino College in Torrance, and CSU, Chico (BA and MPA).
  • City Councilmember (6yrs) and Mayor of Chico (2yrs).
  • Awarded lifetime achievement awards in 2015 from Butte Environmental Council and Butte County Democrats.
